Inverse Problems in Atmospheric Constituent Transport
(Cambridge Atmospheric and Space Science Series)., first, Cambridge University Press, ISBN: 0521018080, 408 pages, $68.00 USD.
Description
This book describes mathematical techniques for interpreting
measurements of greenhouse gases in order to learn about their
sources and sinks. The majority of the book gives general
descriptions of techniques, but the last third covers the
applications to carbon dioxide, methane, chlorofluorocarbons and
other gases implicated in global change.

Data Assimilation: The Ensemble Kalman Filter., 1, Springer, ISBN: 354038300X, 280 pages, $119.00 USD.
Description
Data Assimilation comprehensively covers data assimilation and
inverse methods, including both traditional state estimation and
parameter estimation. This text and reference focuses on various
popular data assimilation methods, such as weak and strong
constraint variational methods and ensemble filters and smoothers.
It is demonstrated how the different methods can be derived from a
common theoretical basis, as well as how they differ and/or are
related to each other, and which properties characterize them,
using several examples. Rather than emphasize a particular
discipline such as oceanography or meteorology, it presents the
mathematical framework and derivations in a way which is common
for any discipline where dynamics is merged with measurements. The
mathematics level is modest, although it requires knowledge of
basic spatial statistics, Bayesian statistics, and calculus of
variations. Readers will also appreciate the introduction to the
mathematical methods used and detailed derivations, which should
be easy to follow, are given throughout the book. The codes used
in several of the data assimilation experiments are available on a
web page. In particular, this webpage contains a complete ensemble
Kalman filter assimilation system, which forms an ideal starting
point for a user who wants to implement the ensemble Kalman filter
with his/her own dynamical model. The focus on ensemble methods,
such as the ensemble Kalman filter and smoother, also makes it a
solid reference to the derivation, implementation and application
of such techniques. Much new material, in particular related to
the formulation and solution of combined parameter and state
estimation problems and the general properties of the ensemble
algorithms, is available here for the first time.

Inverse Methods for Atmospheric Sounding : Theory and
Practice (Series on Atmospheric Oceanic and Planetary
Physics)., first, World Scientific Publishing Company, ISBN: 981022740X, 200 pages, $56.00 USD.
Description
Remote sounding of the atmosphere has proved to be a fruitful
method of obtaining global information about the atmospheres of
the earth and other planets. This book treats comprehensively the
inverse problem of remote sounding, and discusses a wide range of
retrieval methods for extracting atmospheric parameters of
interest from the quantities (thermal emission, for example) that
can be measured remotely. Inverse theory is treated in depth from
an estimation-theory point of view, but practical questions are
also emphasized, such as designing observing systems to obtain the
maximum quantity of information, efficient numerical
implementation of algorithms for processing large quantities of
data, error analysis and approaches to the validation of the
resulting retrievals. The book is targeted at graduate students as
well as scientists.

Computational Methods for Inverse Problems (Frontiers in
Applied Mathematics)., first, Society for Industrial Mathematics, ISBN: 0898715504, 199 pages, $65.50 USD.
Description
Inverse problems arise in a number of important practical
applications, ranging from biomedical imaging to seismic
prospecting. This book provides the reader with a basic
understanding of both the underlying mathematics and the
computational methods used to solve inverse problems. It also
addresses specialized topics like image reconstruction, parameter
identification, total variation methods, nonnegativity
constraints, and regularization parameter selection methods.
Because inverse problems typically involve the estimation of
certain quantities based on indirect measurements, the estimation
process is often ill-posed. Regularization methods, which have
been developed to deal with this ill-posedness, are carefully
explained in the early chapters of Computational Methods for
Inverse Problems. The book also integrates mathematical and
statistical theory with applications and practical computational
methods, including topics like maximum likelihood estimation and
Bayesian estimation. [Amazon's catalog has the right book but lists
