The Spell of the Sensuous: Perception and Language in a
More-Than-Human World (Vintage)., 1st Vintage Books ed., Vintage, ISBN: 0679776397, 352 pages, $14.95 USD.
Description
For a thousand generations human beings viewed themselves a part of
the wider community of nature, and they carried on active
relationship not only with other people but with other animals,
plants, and natural objects (including mountains, rivers, winds,
and weather patterns) that we have only lately come to think of as
"inanimate". How, then, did humans come to sever their ancient
reciprocity with the natural world? What will it takes for us to
recover a sustaining relation with the breathing earth? In "The
Spell of the Sensuous" David Abram draws on sources as diverse as
the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty, Balinese shamanism, Apache
storytelling, and his own experience as an accomplished
sleight-of-hand magician to reveal the subtle dependence of human
cognition on the natural environment. He explores the character
of perception and excavates the sensual foundations of language
which — even at its most abstract — echoes the calls
and cries of the earth.

Ackerman1991]
Ackerman,
Diane: 1991.
A Natural History of the Senses (Vintage)., reprint ed., Vintage, ISBN: 0679735666, 352 pages, $14.95 USD.
Description
"One of the real tests of writers," notes Ackerman in this
liveliest of nature books, "is how well they write about smells.
If they can't describe the scent of sanctity in a church, can you
trust them to describe the suburbs of the heart?" Ackerman passes
the test, writing with ease and fluency about the five senses. Did
you know that bat guano smells like stale Wheat Thins? That Bach's
music can quell anger around the world? That the leaves that
shimmer so beautifully in fall have "no adaptive purpose"?
Ackerman does, and she guides us through questions of sensation
with an eye for the amusingly arcane reference and just the right
phrase.

Aron1997]
Aron,
Elaine: 1997.
The Highly Sensitive Person., reprint ed., Broadway, ISBN: 0553062182, 272 pages, $15.00 USD.
Description
Are you an HSP? Are you easily overwhelmed by stimuli? Affected by
other people's moods? Easily startled? Do you need to withdraw
during busy times to a private, quiet place? Do you get nervous or
shaky if someone is observing you or competing with you? HSP,
shorthand for "highly sensitive person," describes 15 to 20
percent of the population. Being sensitive is a normal trait
— nothing defective about it. But you may not realize that,
because society rewards the outgoing personality and treats
shyness and sensitivity as something to be overcome. According to
author Elaine Aron (herself an HSP), sensitive people have the
unusual ability to sense subtleties, spot or avoid errors,
concentrate deeply, and delve deeply. This book helps HSPs to
understand themselves and their sensitive trait and its impact on
personal history, career, relationships, and inner life.

of one's own internal bodily sensations — can be a powerful
tool in maintaining health and facilitating recovery from illness.
This book examines the nature of somatic awareness and evaluates
its clinical utility across a wide range of medical conditions,
including migraine, unexplained dizziness and shortness of breath,
and immune system illnesses such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis,

naturalist, and poet, as well as the husband and collaborator of
Margaret Mead. With a new foreword by his daughter Mary Katherine
Bateson, this classic anthology of his major work will continue to
delight and inform generations of readers. Bateson examines the
nature of the mind, seeing it not as a nebulous something, somehow
lodged somewhere in the body of each man, but as a network of
interactions relating the individual with his society and his
species and with the universe at large.

The Body Has a Mind of Its Own: How Body Maps in Your Brain
Help You Do (Almost) Everything Better., 1, Random House, ISBN: 1400064694, 240 pages, $24.95 USD.
Description
Just as road maps represent interconnections across the landscape,
your many body maps represent all aspects of your bodily self,
inside and out. In concert, they create your physical and
emotional awareness and your sense of being a whole, feeling self
in a larger social world. Moreover, your body maps are profoundly
elastic. Your self doesn’t begin and end with your physical
body but extends into the space around you. This space morphs
every time you put on or take off clothes, ride a bike, or wield a
tool. When you drive a car, your personal body space grows to
envelop it. When you play a video game, your body maps
automatically track and emulate the actions of your character
onscreen. When you watch a scary movie, your body maps put dread
in your stomach and send chills down your spine. If your body maps
fall out of sync, you may have an out-of-body experience or see
auras around other people. The Body Has a Mind of Its Own
explains how you can tap into the power of body maps to do
almost anything better–whether it is playing tennis,
strumming a guitar, riding a horse, dancing a waltz, empathizing
with a friend, raising children, or coping with stress.

Bloom1997]
Bloom,
Sandra L.: 1997.
Creating Sanctuary: Toward the Evolution of Sane Societies., 1st ed., Routledge, ISBN: 0415918588, 320 pages, $30.95 USD.
Description
Creating Sanctuary makes some broadly challenging statements about
human nature and social organization. Dr. Sandra Bloom interweaves
the individual and the social, the personal and the political,
with the story of how she and a group of friends and colleagues
created a traditional psychiatric milieu based on social
psychiatry principles. Bloom and her colleagues have come to
believe that unresolved, multi-generational, often forgotten
trauma leads to a compulsion to repeat that is a powerful force in
individual and social history. Because of this unresolved legacy
of trauma, all of our social systems are "trauma-organized,"
producing institutions which are unresponsive to and often
directly counter to human needs. Creating Sanctuary presents the
thesis that effective social reconstruction is only effective if
we understand the biological, psychological, social, and moral
legacy of trauma.

Bond,
Mary: 1996.
Balancing Your Body: A Self-Help Approach to Rolfing Movement., new ed., Healing Arts Press, ISBN: 0892816422, 224 pages, $14.95 USD.
Description
Going beyond good posture and movement efficiency, Mary Bond
presents a unique self-help program of body transformation. Much
of what we experience as physical tension or stress is the result
of an imbalanced body. When our physical structure is habitually
bent, twisted, and compressed, the body glues itself together with
tension in order to remain upright. Bond demonstrates how the
connective tissue that holds our bodies together is actually very
flexible and will, with encouragement, adapt to new, healthy
patterns of posture and movement.

Braddock1995]

Body Voices: Using the Power of Breath, Sound, and Movement to
Heal and Create New Boundaries
., 1st ed., Page Mill Press, ISBN: 1879290057, 275 pages, $19.95 USD.
Description
Traditional therapeutic approaches to treating trauma survivors
focus on survivor's words about their mental processes. The
Braddock Body Process was developed in response to the author's
observation that many survivors have no voice to express the kind
of anger, sadness, frustration or pain they experience. Instead
they suffer in silence. In this book Ms. Braddock identifies three
main types that illustrate how victims embody the memory of their
trauma and pain. These body types — rigid, collapsed and
inanimate — express their respective and distinct patterns of
breath, sound and movement. In Body Voices she describes these
types in detail, and offers eight guided learning lessons that
invite the reader to follow a path of healing using breath, sound,
and movement to unlock feelings that have been frozen in the body.

The Way of Transition: Embracing Life's Most Difficult Moments., reprint ed., Perseus Publishing, ISBN: 073820529X, 256 pages, $14.95 USD.
Description
When author Bill Bridges's wife died from breast cancer, he began
to question all his previous groundbreaking work on transitions.
Having conducted seminars and written bestselling books on
transition, Bridges had built a reputation as an expert on the
topic. And yet, "I felt now that my words had totally failed to
match in depth the experience of actually being in transition," he
explains. After floundering in self-doubt for months after his
wife died, Bridges embarked on a spiritual pilgrimage through
Wales. During his visits to sacred sites, Bridges began to see
that he hadn't been misguiding people. Rather, he simply had more
to offer on the subject of transition — more depth, more
spirit, and above all else, more experience. So at 66 years old he
wrote this excellent and highly personal book in which he examines
the pain and challenge of transition — how it is a time of
letting go of the past while taking hold of the future.

Butler1991]
Butler,
David S.: 1991.
Mobilisation of the Nervous System., 1st ed., Churchill Livingstone, ISBN: 0443044007, 265 pages, $105.00 USD.
Description
"Mobilisation of the Nervous System" describes an innovative
concept of examination and treatment technique. David Butler
associates clinical reasoning processes with a new understanding of
the nervous system as a dynamic continuum: mechanical, chemical,
and electrical aspects are interrelated and interference with any
part may have implications for the whole. The approach utilises
passive mobilisation through tension testing. Standard tension
tests are refined, new tests introduced, and their use extended
beyond diagnosis to successful treatment and a better understanding
of many commonly encountered syndromes. This book broadens the
horizons of manual therapy to embrace adverse tension in the
nervous system. Injury can impair the mobility and elasticity of
the nervous system, which are both essential features of normal
body movement. The author contends that the clinical consequences
of altered nervous system biomechanics are unrecognized and that
many disorders attributed to musculoskeletal origins actually
originate from, or have a significant component of adverse neural
tension.

Description
Sharon Butler was working as a massage therapist and Hellerwork
practitioner when she developed carpal tunnel syndrome and
tendinitis. Unable to sleep through the night because of the pain
and concerned about her livelihood, she built upon her knowledge
of connective tissue and developed a series of stretching
exercises to gently relieve the tension in her body. The book is
arranged to help users develop a personalized stretching program
with more than 40 stretches for the upper body, forearms, wrists,
fingers, and thumbs to choose from. Butler thoroughly explains the
importance of stretching and the correct (and incorrect) way to do
it, and the exercises are lucidly illustrated.

Impersonal World., 1st ed., Hohm Press, ISBN: 1890772240, 384 pages, $19.95 USD.
Description
For babies to develop normally, they must be touched. Adults, too,
thrive when touch is a normal part of their each day: a reassuring
handshake, a sympathetic hug, a healing massage. But how often do
we permit ourselves or others these simple forms of contact:
physical touch, our emotional presence, spiritual communion? We
need to get more in touch — closer to who we really are as a
species, and in ways that support our highest human potential.
Touching can be communication, friendship, kindness, service, or
love for God. Topics include: the highest human need, the roots
of violence and abuse, acquisitions as a substitute for touch,
healing through touch, a healthy model of sexuality, and touch as
a context for our lives. The foreword is by Ashley Montagu.

Influence: Science and Practice (4th Edition)., 4th ed., Allyn & Bacon, ISBN: 0321011473, 262 pages, $22.99 USD.
Description
The initial version of Influence was designed for the popular
reader, and as such, an attempt was made to write it in an
engaging style. In the subsequent versions, that style is
retained, but in addition, Cialdini presents the research evidence
for his statements, recommendations, and conclusions. Although
they are dramatized and corroborated through such devices as
interviews, quotes, and systematic personal observations, the
conclusions of Influence are based on controlled, psychological
research. This fact allows the instructor, the student, and the
popular reader to feel confident that the book is not "pop"
psychology but represents work that is scientifically grounded.
The subsequent versions also provide new and updated material,
chapter summaries, and study questions to enhance its classroom
utility. A potentially attractive feature of the present version
of Influence lies in its ability to serve as an enjoyable,
practical, yet scientifically documented text for both students
and the general reader.

Working Minds: A Practitioner's Guide to Cognitive Task Analysis (Bradford Books)., 1, The MIT Press, ISBN: 0262532816, 332 pages, $25.95 USD.
Description
Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA) helps researchers understand how
cognitive skills and strategies make it possible for people to act
effectively and get things done. CTA can yield information people
need--employers faced with personnel issues, market researchers
who want to understand the thought processes of consumers,
trainers and others who design instructional systems, health care
professionals who want to apply lessons learned from errors and
accidents, systems analysts developing user specifications, and
many other professionals. CTA can show what makes the workplace
work--and what keeps it from working as well as it might. "Working
Minds" is a true handbook, offering a set of tools for doing CTA:
methods for collecting data about cognitive processes and events,
analyzing them, and communicating them effectively. It covers both
the "why" and the "how" of CTA methods, providing examples,
guidance, and stories from the authors' own experiences as CTA
practitioners. Because effective use of CTA depends on some
conceptual grounding in cognitive theory and research--on knowing
what a cognitive perspective can offer--the book also offers an
overview of current research on cognition. The book provides
detailed guidance for planning and carrying out CTA, with chapters
on capturing knowledge and capturing the way people reason. It
discusses studying cognition in real-world settings and the
challenges of rapidly changing technology. And it describes key
issues in applying CTA findings in a variety of fields. Working
Minds makes the methodology of CTA accessible and the skills
involved attainable.

Description
Part psychological study, part self-help book, "Finding Flow" is
a prescriptive guide that helps us reclaim ownership of our lives.
"Finding Flow" contends that we often walk through our days unaware
and out of touch with our emotional lives. Our inattention makes us
constantly bounce between tow extremes: during much of the day we
live filled with the anxiety and pressures of our work and
obligations, while during our leisure moments, we tend to live in
passive boredom. The key, according to Csikszentmihalyi, is to
challenge ourselves with tasks requiring a high degree of skill and

Most massage therapists in practice today readily acknowledge that
if they received any breast massage education at all when they were
in training, they did not receive enough. Breast health care is
vitally important to women, yet most do not know how to find
practitioners who will support their breast tissue health. Massage
therapists can provide gentle and effective treatment of a number
of the breast complaints that women have, including post-surgical
and scar work, easing of discomforts of pregnancy and
breast-feeding, treatment of congestion and edema, and alleviation
of many of the causes of breast pain.Massage therapists can also
play a role in supporting our clients' regular breast monitoring
practices. While most massage practitioners believe in the
therapeutic value of breast massage, most do not have confidence in
their skills in relation to this sensitive area of treatment. This
groundbreaking book provides the knowledge and understanding that
massage therapists need to be able to offer breast massage when
appropriate, as part of the fundamental set of health care services
we provide for those who choose massage therapy.

Description
Another entry in the small but growing management library that
suggests purposely slowing down and smelling the roses could
actually boost productivity in today's 24/7 world, Tom DeMarco's
"Slack" stands out because it is aimed at "the infernal
busyness of the modern workplace." DeMarco writes, "Organizations
sometimes become obsessed with efficiency and make themselves so
busy that responsiveness and net effectiveness suffer." By
intentionally creating downtime, or "slack," management will find
a much-needed opportunity to build a "capacity to change" into an
otherwise strained enterprise that will help companies respond
more successfully to constantly evolving conditions. Focusing
specifically on knowledge workers and the environment in which
they toil, DeMarco addresses the corporate stress that results
from going full-tilt, and offers remedies he thinks will foster
growth instead of stagnation. Slack, he contends, is just the
thing to nurture the out-of-box thinking required in the 21st
century, and within these pages, he makes a strong case for it.

Toward a General Theory of Expertise: Prospects and Limits., 1st ed., Cambridge University Press, ISBN: 0521406129, 354 pages, $48.00 USD.
Description
During the past twenty years, our knowledge about expertise has
dramatically increased. Laboratory analyses of chessmasters,
experts in physics, medicine, international-level musicians,
athletes, writers, and performance artists have allowed us to
carefully examine the cognitive processes mediating outstanding
performance in very diverse areas of expertise. These analyses
have shown that expert performance is primarily a reflection of
acquired skill resulting from the accumulation of domain-specific
knowledge and methods during many years of training and practice
rather than special innate talent. Confronted with universal
limits of human information processing concerning memory capacity
and speed of processing, expert performers are found to be able to
acquire similar types of skills to circumvent these limits.
General findings on expertise are systematized to lay the
foundation of a general theory of expertise. In this book, many of
the world's foremost scientists studying expert performance in
specific domains of expertise review the state-of-the-art
knowledge about expertise in these domains with the goal of
identifying characteristics of expert performance that can be
generalized across many different areas of expertise. These papers
provide a comprehensive summary of general methods to study
expertise and the current knowledge about expertise in chess,
physics, medicine, sports, performing arts, music, writing, and
decision-making. Most importantly, they reveal the existence of
many general characteristics of expertise.

Employability
— Jossey Bass Higher and Adult Education Series., 1st ed., Jossey-Bass, ISBN: 0787909211, 273 pages, $41.84 USD.
Description
"The Bases of Competence" explains what skills and competencies
students need to succeed in today's workplace and details how
colleges and universities can strengthen the curriculum to
cultivate these skills in their undergraduate students. The book
addresses the continuing disparity between the skills developed in
college and the essential skills needed in the dynamic workplace
environment. By providing a common language from which to work,
"The Bases of Competence" enables both educators and employers to
create educational experiences of practical and enduring value.
Drawing on more than a decade of research on companies,
graduates, and students, the authors identify four distinct skill
combinations most desired by employers — Managing Self,
Communicating, Managing People and Tasks, and Mobilizing
Innovation and Change. Using case studies and best practices from
a wide variety of institutional settings and workplace
environments, the authors show how developing competencies narrows
the gap between the classroom and work--providing students with a
portfolio of basic skills that translate into lifelong
employability.

"Awareness Through Movement". Here is a way for people of every
age to integrate physical and mental development into a new,
invigorating wholeness. Feldenkrais provides a modern-day,
practical program for the perennial ideal of a healthy mind in a
healthy body. His down-to-earth method carefully avoids any
mystical component and never obliges any pupil to master abstruse
theories. Exercises for posture, eyes, imagination, and more will
simultaneously build better body habits and focus new dimensions
of awareness, self-image, and human potential.

Clinical Practice Guidelines: Directions for a New Program
(Publication Iom, 90-08)., 1st ed., National Academy Press, ISBN: 0309043468, 168 pages, $35.00 USD.
Description
This Institute of Medicine report has become one of the standard
references of various national and international groups working on
clinical practice guidelines. It set the guidelines for creating
guidelines. "Public and private activities related to practice
guidelines can be conceptualized, ideally, as having three basic
stages: development, intervention, and evaluation. The second and
third stages shouldagain ideallyinvolve feedback loops to the
first stage to prompt the revision of guidelines when omissions,
technical obsolescence, or other problems with a set of guidelines
are identified. Guidelines are thus dynamic, not static. They
reflect the interplay of scientific and technological progress,
real-world organizational pressures, and changes in social values.
To date, most government and other initiatives emphasize the first
of the three stages, the development of guidelines."

Guidelines for Clinical Practice: From Development to Use., 1st ed., National Academies Press, ISBN: 0309045894, 426 pages, $82.50 USD.
Description
Guidelines for the clinical practice of medicine have been proposed
as the solution to the whole range of current health care problems.
This new book presents the first balanced and highly practical view
of guidelines — their strengths, their limitations, and how
they can be used most effectively to benefit health care. The
volume offers: recommendations and a proposed framework for
strengthening development and use of guidelines; numerous examples
of guidelines; a ready-to-use instrument for assessing the
soundness of guidelines, and six case studies exploring issues
involved when practitioners use guidelines on a daily basis. With a
real-world outlook, the volume reviews efforts by agencies and
organizations to disseminate guidelines and examines how well
guidelines are functioning — exploring issues such as patient
information, liability, costs, computerization, and the adaptation
of national guidelines to local needs.

Touch (Bradford Books)., reprint ed., The MIT Press, ISBN: 0262561565, 193 pages, $14.95 USD.
Description
The first sensory input in life comes from the sense of touch
while a baby is still in the womb, and touch continues to be the
primary means of learning about the world throughout infancy, well
into childhood. Touch is critical for children's growth,
development, and health, as well as for adults' physical and
mental well-being. Yet American society, claims Tiffany Field, is
dangerously touch-deprived. Field, a leading authority on touch
and touch therapy, begins this accessible book with an overview of
the sociology and anthropology of touching and the basic
psychophysical properties of touch. She then reports recent
research results on the value of touch therapies, such as massage
therapy, for various conditions, including asthma, cancer, autism,
and eating disorders. She emphasizes the need for a change in
societal attitudes toward touching, particularly among those who
work with children.

Dynamic Alignment Through Imagery., 1st ed., Human Kinetics Publishers, ISBN: 0873224752, 320 pages, $27.95 USD.
Description
Destined to become a classic text and reference, Dynamic Alignment
Through Imagery shows you how to use imaging techniques to improve
posture and alignment and release excess tension. The book's 195
illustrations will help you visualize the images and exercises and
show you how to use them in a variety of contexts. Part I of
"Dynamic Alignment Through Imagery" discusses the origins and uses
of imagery and includes 36 exercises that demonstrate dynamic
alignment in practice. You'll explore the importance of posture
and dynamic alignment and discover how to use imagery to affect
body movement. Part II explains the biomechanical and anatomical
principles behind complex imagery and illustrates 52 exercises to
bring these principles to life. You'll learn how to use basic
physics to create a strong yet fluid balance in your muscles and
joints. Part III provides 250 anatomical imagery exercises to help
you fine-tune alignments and increase body awareness. The
exercises focus on different regions of the body — the
pelvis, hips, knees, lower legs, spine, shoulders, arms, hands,
head, and neck — as well as on breathing. You can select
specific images to address individual needs or follow the sequence
presented in the book. Part IV provides 23 holistic exercises to
sculpt and improve alignment in various positions —
standing, supine, and sitting. These exercises will help you
establish a body image that facilitates dynamic alignment and
releases excess tension. By practicing the techniques described in
Dynamic Alignment Through Imagery, you'll tap into the power of
imagery and create better movement.

Description
Combining scientific principles with movement and imagery
exercises that are both effective and fun, this book demonstrates
how to create a stronger body by toning the pelvic floor. Focusing
on the biomechanics of the pelvic floor, which acts as a support
for the inner organs and contains a passage for the urethra, the
sex organs, and the rectum, this guide shows how the pelvic floor
plays an important role in almost all movements, balance, and body
posture. The exercises train the muscles and joints and improve
the tone of the organs, thereby increasing energy flow,
eliminating incontinence, and keeping sexual organs healthy. The
mind-body techniques are used to increase awareness of this part
of the body and to improve sexual stamina.

Description
The mental technique of imagery — demonstrated, for
example, when a dancer pictures a sunflower reaching toward the
sun as he/she stretches upward — is thoroughly explained in
this guide to daily stress-relieving routines. Movement,
coordination, flexibility, and posture are discussed as external
characteristics that can be improved significantly with a strong
inner focus, and the same conclusion is reached in chapters on the
benefits of good mental health for circulation, breathing, and
even individual body cells. Practical advice proceeds from this
background information, including how to choose and use an
assortment of personal mental images, how to use tricks such as
"mental recycling," and how to set up an imagined "portable
fitness studio" during stress-inducing dead time waiting in line,
climbing stairs, sitting in an airplane seat, talking on the

Description
Gently dismantling the myth of medical infallibility, Dr. Atul
Gawande's "Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect
Science" is essential reading for anyone involved in medicine
— on either end of the stethoscope. Medical professionals
make mistakes, learn on the job, and improvise much of their
technique and self-confidence. Gawande's tales are humane and
passionate reminders that doctors are people, too. His prose is
thoughtful and deeply engaging, shifting from sometimes painful
stories of suffering patients (including his own child) to
intriguing suggestions for improving medicine with the same care
he expresses in the surgical theater. Some of his ideas will make
health care providers nervous or even angry, but his disarming
style, confessional tone, and thoughtful arguments should win over
most readers. "Complications" is a book with heart and an
excellent bedside manner, celebrating rather than berating doctors
for being merely human.

focusing is a new technique of self therapy that teaches you to
identify and change the way your personal problems concretely

Unlike methods that stress "getting in touch with your feelings",
there is a built-in test: each focusing step, when done correctly,

"Focusing" guides you to the deepest level of awareness within

unresolved problems actually exist, and only on this level can
they change.

Description
Does the current practice of self-regulation in the health care
field protect the public? Gross evaluates the available evidence
and concludes that current licensing of health care providers by
self-regulation has not safeguarded the public interest. —
Gross has written a comprehensive examination of professional
licensure, drawing on the work of researchers from many different
fields to make his text an interdisciplinary view of professional
self-regulation, with specific emphasis on the health care field. A
brief history of licensure is presented along with a discussion of
the issues related to competency and quality of care. Alternatives
to licensure are suggested, which Gross believes will improve
public safety. This is an effective book on a very complex and
important public issue. Gross has done a thorough job of evaluating
the research on this subject and has included a very helpful
bibliography. He challenges the professional establishment in a
thoughtful manner. His concerns, data, and recommendations deserve
careful review and consideration by anyone who has a professional
interest in health care services.

Somatics: Reawakening the Mind's Control of Movement,

Description
The groundbreaking program for healthy aging through movement and
flexibility. In the revolutionary "Somatics", Thomas Hanna
demonstrates that so many problems we accept as inevitable over
time — chronic stiffness, bad back, chronic pain, fatigue,
and even high blood pressure — need never occur if we
maintain conscious control of nerve and muscle, a state which
Hanna calls sensory-motor awareness. This gentle, lifelong program
can help almost anyone maintain the pleasures of a supple, healthy
body indefinitely, with only a five-minute routine once a day.

The Loss That Is Forever: The Lifelong Impact of the Early
Death of a Mother or Father., reprint ed., Plume, ISBN: 0452272688, 368 pages, $15.00 USD.
Description
Clinical psychologist Maxine Harris shows how the death of a parent
before someone reaches adulthood is a life-defining event with
profound and long-lasting effects. Ripple effects may appear in
every aspect of adult development. Interview material is woven
together with literary sources including Virginia Woolf, C.S.
Lewis, and Charles Darwin to illustrate how themes of loss and
survival become central to the lives of those who have lost a
parent in childhood. She discusses the relationship with the
surviving parent, intimate relationships, and perspectives on one's
own mortality. For anyone who has survived the early loss of a
parent, as well as for those with a spouse, friend, or lover who
has lost a parent in childhood, this book can provide helpful
insights into why people are the way they are. This would also be
an excellent read for a surviving parent or family member who would
like to help a child with grief recovery.

The Wisdom of the Body Moving: An Introduction to

Description
This comprehensive guide introduces Body-Mind Centering, the
internationally recognized field pioneered by dancer and
occupational therapist Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen. Devoting
thirty-five years to a systematic investigation of the relations
between bodily experience and the anatomical maps of science,
Bainbridge Cohen independently discovered many of the principles
that underlie Feldenkrais work, cranial osteopathy, Rolfing, dance
therapy, and Zero Balancing. Experienced BMC practitioner Linda
Hartley demonstrates the basic philosophy and key elements of
Body-Mind Centering. Drawing on animal and infant movements, she
takes readers through the wondrous realms of Bainbridge Cohens
pantheonfrom the minds of the skeletal and muscular systems to
the quite different inner lives of digestive, lymphatic, urinary,
respiratory, vocal, circulatory, endocrine, and reproductive
organs. Her choreography ultimately brings us into the states of
consciousness of skins, cells, blood, fat, cerebrospinal fluid,
nervous system, and brain. Hartleys explorations of the images,
feelings, sensations, and intuitions of the diverse organs and
cells lead to exercises that gently guide students in ways of
discovering and integrating their bodies multidimensional aspects.

Description
Jeff Hawkins, the high-tech success story behind PalmPilots and
the Redwood Neuroscience Institute, does a lot of thinking about
thinking. In "On Intelligence", Hawkins juxtaposes his two loves
— computers and brains — to examine the real future of
artificial intelligence. In doing so, he unites two fields of
study that have been moving uneasily toward one another for at
least two decades. Most people think that computers are getting
smarter, and that maybe someday, they'll be as smart as we humans
are. But Hawkins explains why the way we build computers today
won't take us down that path. He shows, using nicely accessible
examples, that our brains are memory-driven systems that use our
five senses and our perception of time, space, and consciousness
in a way that's totally unlike the relatively simple structures of
even the most complex computer chip. Hawkins does a good job of
outlining current brain research for a general audience, and his
enthusiasm for brains is surprisingly contagious.

You Are Sensory Defensive in an Overstimulating World., reprint ed., Harper Paperbacks, ISBN: 0060932929, 400 pages, $13.95 USD.
Description
This prescriptive book by a developmental psychologist and
sufferer of Sensory Defensive Disorder (SD) sheds light on a
little known but common affliction in which sufferers react to
harmless stimuli as irritating, distracting or dangerous. We all
know what it feels like to be irritated by loud music, accosted by
lights that are too bright, or overwhelmed by a world that moves
too quickly. But millions of people suffer from Sensory Defensive
Disorder (SD), a common affliction in which people react to
harmless stimuli not just as a distracting hindrance, but a
potentially dangerous threat. Sharon Heller, Ph. D. is not only a
trained psychologist, she is sensory defensive herself. Bringing
both personal and professional perspectives, Dr. Heller is the
ideal person to tell the world about this problem that will only
increase as technology and processed environments take over our
lives. In addition to heightening public awareness of this
prevalent issue, Dr. Heller provides tools and therapies for
alleviating and, in some cases, even eliminating defensiveness
altogether. Until now, the treatment for sensory defensiveness has
been successfully implemented in Learning Disabled children in
whom defensiveness tends to be extreme. However, the disorder has
generally been unidentified in adults who think they are either
overstimulated, stressed, weird, or crazy. These sensory defensive
sufferers live out their lives stressed and unhappy, never knowing
why or what they can do about it. Now, with "Too Loud, Too Bright,
Too Fast, Too Tight", they have a compassionate spokesperson and a
solution-oriented book of advice.

We expose it, cover it, paint it, tattoo it, scar it, and pierce

advertising our health, our identity, and our individuality. This
dazzling synthetic overview, written with a poetic touch and
taking many intriguing side excursions, is a complete guidebook to
the pliable covering that makes us who we are. "Skin: A Natural
History" celebrates the evolution of three unique attributes of
human skin: its naked sweatiness, its distinctive sepia rainbow of
colors, and its remarkable range of decorations. Jablonski begins
with a look at skin's structure and functions and then tours its
three-hundred-million-year evolution, delving into such topics as
the importance of touch and how the skin reflects and affects
emotions. She examines the modern human obsession with age-related
changes in skin, especially wrinkles. She then turns to skin as a
canvas for self-expression, exploring our use of cosmetics, body
paint, tattooing, and scarification. "Skin: A Natural History"
places the rich cultural canvas of skin within its broader
biological context for the first time, and the result is a
tremendously engaging look at ourselves.

Sources of Power: How People Make Decisions., first, The MIT Press, ISBN: 0262611465, 348 pages, $27.00 USD.
Description
Gary Klein studies decision-making in the field, tagging along
with firefighters, standing by in intensive-care units, and
watching chess masters play lightning-fast "blitz" games to learn
how people make choices with time constraints, limited
information, and changing goals. From this research, he and his
associates have developed a theory of "naturalistic
decision-making. "Sources of Power" essentially lends the validity
of scientific research to techniques that many of us use every
day. There's intuition, which is based not on instantaneous
insight but on the rapid (perhaps even subconscious)
interpretation of perceptual cues. There's mental simulation, a
finely honed method of visualization. There's storytelling and
metaphor, which enable decision-makers to devise meaningful
frameworks and compare their present situations to previous
events. Nobody is born with an inherent mastery of these and other
techniques, Klein tells us, but we are all born with the
capability to develop, through experience, the skill sets experts
call upon to make good decisions.

Consciousness is one of science's last great unsolved mysteries.
How can the salty taste and crunchy texture of potato chips, the
unmistakable smell of dogs after they have been in the rain, or
the exhilarating feeling of hanging on tiny fingerholds many feet
above the last secure foothold on a cliff, emerge from networks of
neurons and their associated synaptic and molecular processes? In
The Quest for Consciousness, Caltech neuroscientist Christof Koch
explores the biological basis of the subjective mind in animals
and people. He outlines a framework that he and Francis Crick (of
the "double helix") have constructed to come to grips with the
ancient mind-body problem. At the heart of their framework is a
sustained, empirical approach to discovering and characterizing
the neuronal correlates of consciousness - the NCC - the subtle,
flickering patterns of brain activity that underlie each and every
conscious experience.

Waking the Tiger : Healing Trauma : The Innate Capacity to
Transform Overwhelming Experiences., 1st ed., North Atlantic Books, ISBN: 155643233X, 274 pages, $16.95 USD.
Description
Waking the Tiger offers a new and hopeful vision of trauma. It
views the human animal as a unique being, endowed with an
instinctual capacity. It asks and answers an intriguing question.--
why are animals in the wild, though threatened routinely, rarely
traumatized? By understanding the dynamics that make wild animals
virtually immune to traumatic symptoms, the mystery of human trauma
is revealed. Waking the Tiger normalizes the symptoms of trauma and
the steps needed to heal them. People are often traumatized by
seemingly ordinary experiences. The reader is taken on a guided
tour of the subtle, yet powerful impulses that govern our responses
to overwhelming life events. To do this, it employs a series of
exercises that help us focus on bodily sensations. Through
heightened awareness of these sensations trauma can be healed.

The Lost Art of Healing: Practicing Compassion in Medicine., 1st Ballantine ed., Ballantine Books, ISBN: 0345425979, 368 pages, $14.95 USD.
Description
The real crisis in medicine today is not about economics,
insurance, or managed care — it's about the loss of the
fundamental human relationship between doctor and patient. In this
wise and passionate book, one of our most eminent physicians
reacquaints us with a classic notion often overlooked in modern
medicine: health care with a human face, in which the time-honored
art of healing guides doctors in their approach to patient care
and their use of medical technology. Drawing on four decades of
practice as a cardiologist and a vast knowledge of literature and
medical history, Dr. Lown probes the heart and soul of the
doctor-patient relationship. Insightful and accessible to all, The
Lost Art of Healing describes how true healers use sympathetic
listening and touch to hone their diagnostic skills, how language
affects the perception of illness, how doctors and patients can
cultivate a relationship of trust, and how patients can obtain the
most complete and beneficial care through a combination of healing
techniques and conventional practices. Lown explains, the art of
healing does not mean abandoning the spectacular advances of
modern science, but rather incorporating them into a sensitive,
humane, enlightened approach to medical care. With its urgent
message and poignant, fascinating vignettes, The Lost Art of
Healing is a book of vital, universal importance.

Facilitated Stretching., 3 Pap/DVD, Human Kinetics Publishers, ISBN: 0736062483, 183 pages, $24.95 USD.
Description
This textbook aimed for massage therapy, athletic training, and
other related courses; reference for sports medicine and fitness
professionals, therapists, coaches, and athletes. The third
edition of “Facilitated Stretching” is now revised,
reorganized, and packaged with a DVD—surpassing its popular
predecessor as the best source for the latest PNF (proprioceptive
neuromuscular facilitation) stretching techniques. Facilitated
Stretching, Third Edition, provides a useful overview of PNF
stretching—a safe and easy-to-use method that involves
stretching the muscle, contracting it isometrically against
resistance, then stretching it again to a new range of motion.
These steps apply whether you are isolating one muscle at a time
or using the spiral-diagonal patterns of PNF to stretch groups of
muscles simultaneously. The third edition contains all the great
features of the previous edition, plus the following: a companion
DVD that demonstrates live stretching techniques from the book for
a clearer understanding; new stretching routines for a variety of
popular activities including running, golf, swimming, cycling, and
throwing and racket sports; general stretches and stretches for
older participants; stretching activities with added strength work
using stability balls and elastic bands; and stretching and
strengthening tips for dealing with and even preventing common
soft-tissue injuries. The new edition has also been reorganized
using a regional approach to presenting muscle group functions
around specific joints. You will learn how to stretch each major
muscle in the body, both individually and in groups. In addition,
you will discover how to appropriately use group pattern stretches
to improve flexibility and coordination and individual muscle
stretches to relax tight muscles and break up adhesions within or
between muscles. Instruction is provided for using the techniques
on your own or with a partner. More than 350 photographs showing
the progression of stretches enrich the book while the new
60-minute DVD demonstrates the stretches and strengthening
exercises in even more detail. Icons are featured throughout the
text, indicating which exercises are demonstrated on the DVD. A
unique binding also allows you to lay the book flat while
performing the exercises without losing your place. The DVD serves
as a great visual tool for improving your technique and getting
the most out of your routines.

Description
Why is some therapy effective and some disappointing? Amy Mindell
says it has to do with the subtle atmosphere created by
therapists' unconscious feelings and attitudes. By tapping into
their deepest beliefs about spirit, nature, and human development
(metaskills), they can become more effective healers and spiritual
teachers. Through years of researching Arnold Mindell's work with
individuals, couples, and groups, Amy Mindell has identified a
number of feeling attitudes which she amplifies here through
analogies to Eastern traditions, the teachings of Don Juan, and/or
modern physics. She approaches the question of learning
metaskills: Is it possible? How is it done? She postulates that
the therapist, not unlike the client, is on a path of spiritual
development, and she explains how the concept could revolutionize
the vast field of psychotherapy. The book has numerous verbatim
transcripts, as well as detailed theoretical and poetic
explanations.

A full-color atlas of the muscles of the human body, this text

a drawing with an arrow showing the muscle's line of pull,
innervation to two levels of detail, and arterial supply to two
levels of detail. That overview is followed by a practical,

Anatomy Trains: Myofascial Meridians for Manual and Movement Therapists., reissue ed., Churchill Livingstone, ISBN: 0443063516, 310 pages, $52.95 USD.
Description
An accessible and comprehensive approach to the anatomy and
function of the fascial system in the body combined with a
holistic overview of myofascial therapy. Many different therapists
now use myofascial techniques to influence postural change and
pain relief. This book demonstrates exactly how the muscles
connect within the connect tissue to affect posture, compensatory
strain, and pain patterns. The aim is to present scientifically
sound and often complicated material in a way which can be easily
learned, understood, and applied by those who do not necessarily
have a scientific background. ANATOMY TRAINS is written and
presented in a style that allows this new information on the
myofascial system to be easily absorbed by a wide range of
readers: from the student, athlete, or client to the most
experienced therapist.

Free Play., reprint ed., Tarcher, ISBN: 0874776317, 224 pages, $12.95 USD.
Description
This book is about the inner sources of spontaneous creation. It
is about where art in the widest sense comes from. It is about why
we create and what we learn when we do. It is about the flow of
unhindered creative energy: the joy of making art in all its
varied forms. Free Play is directed toward people in any field
who want to contact, honor, and strengthen their own creative
powers. It integrates material from a wide variety of sources
among the arts, sciences, and spiritual traditions of humanity.
Filled with unusual quotes, amusing and illuminating anecdotes,
and original metaphors, it reveals how inspiration arises within
us, how that inspiration may be blocked, derailed or obscured by
certain unavoidable facts of life, and how finally it can be
liberated - how we can be liberated - to speak or sing, write or
paint, dance or play, with our own authentic voice. The whole
enterprise of improvisation in life and art, of recovering free
play and awakening creativity, is about being true to ourselves
and our visions. It brings us into direct, active contact with
boundless creative energies that we may not even know we had.

The Complete Book of Shiatsu Therapy., reprint ed., Japan Publications (USA), ISBN: 087040461X, 256 pages, $22.00 USD.
Description
Tokujiro Namikoshi Sensei, the founder of Shiatsu Therapy, was
born November 3rd, 1905 in Kagawa prefecture on Shikoku Island,
Japan. When he was 7 years old, his family moved to Hokkaido where
the weather was cold and harsh. His mother "Masa" developed
rheumatoid arthritis as a result of hard physical labour and the
change from a warm to a cold, damp climate. There was no doctor or
medicine available due to the isolation. Tokujiro, only 7 years of
age, tried to ease his mother's pain. He discovered that she felt
better when he pressed on her body with his thumbs, rather than
stroking or rubbing. He concentrated his pressure on points which
he found on the cervical region of her spine as well as the middle
and lower back. As he applied himself, he also learned the
relationship between the Adrenal glands and rheumatism. Eventually
Masa's rheumatoid arthritis was cured by Tokujiro's treatment. She
lived in good health to be 88 years of age. From his study and
practice he subsequently developed a scientific anatomical and
physiological theory which explained his treatment. This unique
Japanese hands-on therapy, he called "Shiatsu" (meaning thumb and
finger pressure in Japanese).

Description
This book is for people who feel comfortable communicating through
their hands and for those who wish to feel more ease in
transmitting care through touch. It is for people whose
responsibility or job or gift is to oversee or to help take care
of the elderly and ill members of our society. It is for sons and
daughters caring for aging parents with physical impairments that
effect a role reversal in a lifetime of relating. It is for the
courageous men and women who continue caring for spouses or
mothers or fathers with dementia related diseases such as
Alzheimer's after such a disease has robbed that loved one of the
ability to remember the relationship he or she once shared with
the caregiver. It is for companions and family members struggling
and sometimes sacrificing to provide care for their loved ones at
home. This book is for health professionals who have forgotten or
never learned that touch is medicine and for those who are wise
enough to know that a five-second hug, offered as a gesture of
shared humanity, can often do more to assuage fear and anxiety
than a five-minute lecture.

Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community., new ed., Simon & Schuster, ISBN: 0743203046, 544 pages, $16.00 USD.
Description
Few people outside certain scholarly circles had heard the name
Robert D. Putnam before 1995. But then this self-described
"obscure academic" hit a nerve with a journal article called
"Bowling Alone". Suddenly he found himself invited to Camp David,
his picture in "People" magazine, and his thesis at the
center of a raging debate. In a nutshell, he argued that civil
society was breaking down as Americans became more disconnected
from their families, neighbors, communities, and the republic
itself. The organizations that gave life to democracy were
fraying. Bowling became his driving metaphor. Years ago, he wrote,
thousands of people belonged to bowling leagues. Today, however,
they're more likely to bowl alone: Television,
two-career families, suburban sprawl, generational changes in
values--these and other changes in American society have meant
that fewer and fewer of us find that the League of Women Voters,
or the United Way, or the Shriners, or the monthly bridge club, or
even a Sunday picnic with friends fits the way we have come to
live. Our growing social-capital deficit threatens educational
performance, safe neighborhoods, equitable tax collection,
democratic responsiveness, everyday honesty, and even our health
and happiness.

Democracies in Flux: The Evolution of Social Capital in
Contemporary Society., 1st ed., Oxford University Press, USA, ISBN: 0195171608, 528 pages, $19.95 USD.
Description
In his national bestseller Bowling Alone, Robert Putnam
illuminated the decline of social capital in the US. Now, in
Democracies in Flux, Putnam brings together a group of leading
scholars who broaden his findings as they examine the state of
social capital in eight advanced democracies around the world. The
book is packed with many intriguing revelations. The contributors
note, for instance, that waning participation in unions, churches,
and political parties seems to be virtually universal, a troubling
discovery as these forms of social capital are especially
important for empowering less educated, less affluent portions of
the population. Indeed, in general, the researchers found more
social grouping among the affluent than among the working classes
and they find evidence of a younger generation that is singularly
uninterested in politics, distrustful both of politicians and of
others, cynical about public affairs, and less inclined to
participate in enduring social organizations.

Using simple, clear language to demystify the Zen mindset, he

exercises devoted to any particular physical approach, "Zen

enhanced feeling-awareness, correct structural alignment,
increased spatial acuity, and even a greater interactive presence.
Exercises are simple, often involving feeling-imagery and
meditative awareness, which have a profound and sometimes instant
effect. Where similar guides teach readers what to do, this book
teaches readers how to "be".

The Cultural Creatives: How 50 Million People Are Changing the World., 1st ed., Three Rivers Press, ISBN: 0609808451, 384 pages, $16.00 USD.
Description
Do you "give a lot of importance to helping other people and
bringing out their unique gifts?" Do you "dislike all the emphasis
in modern culture on success and 'making it,' on getting and
spending, on wealth and luxury goods?" Do you "want to be involved
in creating a new and better way of life for our country?" If you
answered yes to all three of these questions--and at least seven
more of the remaining 15 in Paul Ray and Sherry Anderson's
questionnaire — then you are probably a Cultural Creative.
"Cultural Creative" is a term coined by Ray and Anderson to
describe people whose values embrace a curiosity and concern for
the world, its ecosystem, and its peoples; an awareness of and
activism for peace and social justice; and an openness to
self-actualization through spirituality, psychotherapy, and
holistic practices. Cultural Creatives do not just take the money
and run; they don't want to defund the National Endowment for the
Arts; and they do want women to get a fairer shake — not only
in the United States, but around the globe. On the basis of Ray
and Anderson's research, about 50 million Americans are Cultural
Creatives, a group that includes people of all races, ages, and
classes. This subculture could have enormous social and political
clout, the authors argue, if only it had any consciousness of
itself as a cohesive unit, a society of fellow travelers. The
husband and wife team wrote the book "to hold up a mirror" to the
members of this vast but diffuse group, to show them they are not
alone and that they can reshape society to make it more authentic,
compassionate, and engaged. It is an idealistic call for a new
agenda for a new millennium.

Description
Featuring more than 250 photographs and 50 anatomical drawings,
Deep Tissue Massage is the standard guide to the essentials of
touch, biomechanics, and positioning options for a multitude of
strategies to treat all major conditions encountered in a bodywork
practice. The book is divided into three sections.
“Fundamentals” covers basic skills of palpation,
explaining the deeper layers of the body and presenting detailed
instruction on working with these layers to release tension. This
section gives clear information on the proper use of knuckles,
fist, forearms, and elbows in preventing injury to the therapist.
“Strategies” offers more precise protocols and
treatment plans for the entire body with emphasis on client
positioning options to stretch muscles rather than just kneading
tissues. “Caveats” details areas in which the
practitioner needs to exercise caution. Deep Tissue Massage
presents a wealth of information in a way the therapist can
immediately utilize. This new edition has been thoroughly revised
and includes a preface to the new edition, a foreword, an index, a
Suggested Reading list, and extended sections on integrating
deep-tissue massage into bodywork practice and the psychology of
treating injuries. — Art Riggs has created a superb teaching
tool for the classroom and a matchless clinical reference manual.

Salons: The Joy of Conversation (Utne Reader Books)., first, New Society Publishers, ISBN: 0865714444, 240 pages, $16.95 USD.
Description
From the ancient Greek symposia to Gertrude Stein's famous Paris
gatherings, salons have always been the incubators of
provocative-at times even dangerous-ideas: the frontiers of
cultural change. People who might elsewhere have been socially
ostracized were included in salons, welcomed for their wit,
intelligence, charm, and insight. And passionate conversation
often led to passionate action. In 1991, Utne Reader launched a
salon renaissance all over North America when it featured a cover
story on salons. The response to the article was staggering,
leading Utne to organize a National Salon Association that quickly
drew over 20,000 members. Conceived and written by the folks at
Utne, "Salons" is the quintessential authority on the subject,
demonstrating that joining or starting your own salon is just a
living room away.

Description
Today we are experiencing extraordinary technological advances in
the diagnosis and treatment of illness while at the same time
learning to take more responsibility for our own health and
well-being. In this book, Saki Santorelli, director of the

roots of medicine, and shows us how to introduce mindfulness into
the crucible of the healing relationship. His approach
revolutionizes the dynamics between the patient and the
practitioner. In describing the classes at the clinic and the
transformation that takes place in this alchemical process, he
offers insights and effective methods for cultivating mindfulness
in our everyday lives. As he reveals the inner landscape of his
own life as a health care professional and we join him and those
with whom he works on this journey of human suffering and courage,
we become aware of and honor what is darkest and brightest within
each one of us.

A Sense of Dance: Exploring Your Movement Potential., 2nd ed., Human Kinetics Publishers, ISBN: 0736051899, 248 pages, $25.00 USD.
Description
A Sense of Dance: Exploring Your Movement Potential, Second
Edition, is written for true beginners—students who are
exploring the art form for the first time and are not likely to
describe themselves as dancers. Through this text, students
discover that dance is an accessible art form that can bring
greater self-awareness and self-confidence. It helps new dancers
learn how to express themselves through dance. This second
edition, based on an already-successful textbook, features three
new chapters that add even more depth to the topics covered. The
chapters address the power of dance through time and place,
culture, and community; a sense of style; and patterns of
coordination. Like the first edition, this empowering text uses
an interactive approach to invite students to learn about dance
through everyday experiences, personal observations, and guided
experiences. The following are some of the special elements in
the text: • "Inside Insights" encourage students to
reflect on interesting observations that may affect their movement
and expression. • "Try This Experiment" exercises are
guided physical explorations of concepts in the text that help
students become more kinesthetically aware of their movements and
discover new ways of moving. • "Think About It" sections
require students to reflect on how they can apply the information
presented. These considerations provide good material for journal
entries. • "Your Turn to Dance" provides two opportunities
per chapter for students to work in small groups to discover
movement possibilities, solve problems, and hone their observation
and evaluation skills. These become springboards for choreography
that reinforces the concepts in the chapter—and provide
another adventure of exploring movement potential. The author
uses a basic movement vocabulary that you can use to describe and
evaluate movement possibilities, improve sensitivity when working
in groups, develop critical-thinking skills, and express ideas and
emotions through movement. The book also contains these
features designed to help students personalize and interact with
the content: • Short quizzes • Highlight boxes •
Self-assessment exercises • Updated, easy-reference index
Whatever your students' level of artistic awareness, this engaging
text will inspire innovation and help you guide students in the
discovery of their own creativity and sense of dance.

define community as "groups of people who play, work, learn, and
celebrate together." They set out specifics on how to organize,
manage, and enjoy such groups across geographic, age, and other
boundaries. Among the alternatives discussed in depth are cohousing
arrangements, computer linkups, sports teams, and workplace
communities. Leadership and participatory how-tos are spelled out,
as are conflict resolution tips. Each chapter closes with
recommended resources.

Tendon and Ligament Healing: A New Approach to Sports and Overuse Injury., 2nd, rev. and expanded ed., Paradigm Publications (MA), ISBN: 0912111739, 236 pages, $22.95 USD.
Description
In 25 years of practicing structural/osteopathic manual therapy
the author has done considerable work with seriously damaged
tendons and ligaments, and has achieved results that conventional
medicine would rate as improbable. Over time, he has developed a
therapeutic model for treating these injuries so that individuals
with chronic conditions — who have exhausted the standard
physiotherapy options and are facing surgery — can have a
viable option for recovery. His techniques, based on basic
principles of structural healthcare, emphasize the importance of
precise anatomical focus and the capacity to work with subtle
changes of structure. Of essential importance is combining
detailed specific treatment of the small fibers and tissues of the
local injury area with an overall approach to improving larger
body patterns and tensions.

The Whartons' Stretch Book., 1st ed., Three Rivers Press, ISBN: 0812926234, 288 pages, $15.95 USD.
Description
One of the dirty secrets of the fitness world is that for all the
talk about the importance of stretching, many athletes and other
fit people don't bother with it. It's hard to gauge the benefits,
and it seems as if the time could be better spent running, lifting
weights, or perfecting sports skills. This sentiment is expressed
by Dr. Bob Arnot in the foreword to "The Whartons' Stretch Book,"
and he says that the Whartons changed his mind. He went to them
with a stiffened hip that he thought needed surgery, but after a
regimen using the active-isolated stretching technique, his
flexibility in that hip had increased 40 percent.
Active-isolated stretching is very different from what your
high-school gym teacher made you do. Rather than holding a stretch
for a half-minute, you hold it for just two seconds. This prevents
the muscle from activating an instinctual braking device to keep
itself from overstretching. Traditional stretching forces that
braking to occur, and the Whartons think that's not only
counterproductive, but dangerous. If you force too deep a stretch
while the muscle is doing all it can to keep itself from being
stretched, something's got to give. And a torn muscle will repair
itself with scar tissue, ultimately making that muscle less
flexible. The Whartons--a father-and-son personal-training
team who've worked with many pro athletes and Olympic
medalists--show you how to use their stretches to prepare for
dozens of sports, from aerobics to wrestling. Nonathletes get an
entire section of the book, which describes stretch routines to
get your body feeling better after prolonged driving, sitting,
standing, and word processing. The routines are a bit on the
longish side--20 minutes or more--but it doesn't seem like much
time when you think of how long you have to live in your body, and
how much better it will feel if you keep it supple and flexible.

near you," Wheatley writes right up front in the clean,
straightforward voice that always saves her work, unlike that of
so many other "New Age" gurus, from cheesiness. "It has no other
purpose." She then delivers on that promise, making her points in
short, succinct, finely written essays on various aspects of human
understanding and connection, invoking the thinking of great
humanists like Paolo Friere and Nelson Mandela, peppering her
thoughts with encounters with people around the world, and then
expanding on 10 "conversation starters" like "Do I feel a
'vocation to be truly human'?" "When have I experienced good
listening?" and "When have I experienced working for the common
good?"
